Wisdom of Crowds or Foolishness of Herds

wisdom of crowds

Recently there has been many things that has happened in social context, education scene and even at the more basic marketplaces. These, of course, has led to much commentary and narratives on what is good and what is bad; and who is wrong and who is right.

Although I do not think I can add in more to what has been shared and conveyed over the recent days and weeks, I do like to throw in my perspectives as to how we can view certain aspects of the current narratives and see how best we can interpret and analyze the information that we have, considering that our mindsets on such issues are pivotal in our current discussions.

In our current discussions, I do believe that when we are to make collective decisions together, the information that is gathered is very much from information aggregation in big data. However, there are ways to ensure that these information gathered are more reflective to be from wisdom of crowds rather than stupidity of herds.

To ensure that we continually lean towards the wisdom of crowds, three keys are needed. These are the following keys.

Key No. One – Remove Bias

Generally, when people interact, we are trying to form some form of agreement within our mental models. Even when we are disagreeing, we are actually agreeing  on what we are disagreeing. As a result, very often, when we are sharing information and agreeing on them, a large element of it is us agreeing on our shared biases.

Key No. Two – Enable independent thinking

Creating and growing that wisdom of crowds can only be made possible by judgements independently of each other, and it is most effective when a crowd is diverse. In cohesive groups, on the other hand, where members share an identity, the urge for unity usually overrides everything.

Key No. Three – You, the individual, matters

Individuals need to be personally invested in finding out the more, regardless of your expertise, regardless of your field of interest. As a population, the information I do not know will be backed by what you know and vice versa.

And that is how and why, within our population, we need to invest in education as well as the need for continual learning and to learn more, blissfully.
